| Hubble Space Telescope, Holly Golightly (Em's literary/film cousin), and Jess as Disgust from Inside Out |
I spent my Halloween night with my dear friend Emily and we party-hopped from one social engagement to the next. She dressed up as the Hubble Space Telescope (SO AMAZING) and I helped with the NASA facepaint (I'd had some practice from past NASA logo-emblazoning). The best/funniest part of her costume was that it was made from old lampshades, so at each new destination, we had to adjust and replace everything when she got out of the car. I went as Holly Golightly from Breakfast at Tiffany's (Audrey at her best, though I say this about everything that she does) and made most of my costume (I loved my tassel earplugs the most).
"Did you know the Hubble Space Telescope can orbit the earth in 96 minutes? Isn't that fast?!"
"That is very fast!"

Our LA day: the walk of fame, Angels Knoll, the farmer's market, the Bradbury, Sprinkles ice cream, the LA temple, and the Getty.

The best part of the walk of fame were the tour group recruiters trying to win our attention with their knowledge of the locations of famous contemporary Hollywood actors and actresses. Little did they know, we were not your run-of-the-mill LA tourists; we were looking for Audrey, Grace Kelly, and other favorites of yesteryear (I love that word for it always makes me think of "The Parent Trap" and my cousins). I was also excited when I saw Clifton Fadiman's star ( Anne Fadiman's father).
Do you recognize this pretty park? It features in "[500] Days of Summer." We ate lunch here and it was lovely as well as quite close to the Bradbury Building (#1 on my LA itinerary). Since it is located on a hill, it is serviced by stairs and two tram cars running in opposite directions, which were thrilling and also terrifying to ride.

In Italy, pistacchio was my litmus test for gelato. It's one of my favorite flavors, but also distinctive and it was available at most gelaterie so it made for delicious and easy comparisons. Compared to gelato, usually pistachio ice cream, although good, does not capture the flavors of the nut but the pistachio at Sprinkles was so so good.

I love the LA temple and I'm glad I got to visit with my family, as my parents were married there. It's such a beautiful temple and I love the prominent location, as you can see the temple for miles.
LA is an incredible city and it was great to see and experience new-to-me parts of it.
My sisters and I grew up watching old classics and "Charade" is one of my all-time favorites; I remember first watching it when I stayed home sick from school (a rare occasion when your mom is a doctor) in 5th grade, and my mom put it on for me.
This is one of my favorite scenes, but there are so many others that are just as great. Also the many one liners are so good:
"Do women think it feminine to be so illogical, or can't they help it?"
"You're probably weak from hunger; you've only eaten five times today."
Films like this are the main reason I have a hard time watching most contemporary Hollywood movies—there's absolutely no comparison.
P.S. 60s fashion? yes please. This is such a classic style, but I also love how leopard print + orange-red are back (see here, here, here, and here).
I hope it's not a secret that I adore my sisters. Lauren continually inspires me with her ideas and creativity and passion for living. I am so inspired by the person she is and her optimism and hope.
My sisters and I grew up listening to Henry Mancini on long car trips and watching lots of black-and-white film classics. A collective favorite movie that fits both of those bills is "Breakfast at Tiffany's." Yesterday Lauren texted me a photo of her Holly Golightly Halloween costume which she wore to a church dance, but seeing these photos that show the full effect made me so so happy.
I lovelovelove this photo of Lauren holding her cat Scout. ah! Lauren loves that cat and Holly Golightly loves Cat, so this is just too perfect. My mom sewed her shift dress and I especially love the fabric choice, the details of the collar, and the pearl buttons.
