a quote that I love about photography

"Try as best as you can to identify what you like about what is before you, and find ways to make that the very essence of the picture. That’s why photography is an art and not a science–you’re letting your image tell a story about something. Look at the picture–is this what you wanted? How can you make the part that charmed you speak louder? Take it again. And again." -Deb Perelman, Smitten Kitchen (with regard to food photography)

panorama

I like collections of photos [hence these various series] and found that I'd sorted all of the panoramic photographs that I took in Europe into a folder together. While not all of them are great (i.e., they're not all lined up perfectly), putting them all together somehow has a bit more impact.

from the top:
1. Siena: as seen from the back of the Palazzo Pubblico
2. a vineyard near Monteriggioni
3. the Piazza del Campo on the day of the Palio
4. sunflowers down the street from where we lived
5. Siena: the Duomo (left) and Torre del Mangia (right) as seen from here
6. the Piazza del Campo by night

7. the Via dell'Amore along the coast (le Cinque Terre)
8. Corniglia

9. Rome: the Colosseum by night
10. Rome: the Trevi fountain

11. Paris: the Eiffel Tower as seen from Trocadéro
12. Paris: Musée d'Orangerie
13. Paris skyline taken from the bell tower of Notre Dame

delmarvelous.

[this post title refers to the word "Delmarva" which is actually used, i promise! go to southern delaware, and you will hear it ALL over the radio]

bethany beach delaware is one of my favorite east coast locales. it was fantastic, and really good to see our friends too!

this bridge reminds me sooo much of Santiago Calatrava's work... although it's not actually by him. but if you have ever seen Harry Potter 6.....then you've seen this bridge of his!!

 dolphins!

(borrowed water camera? yesssss.)

this orangeade (limeade and lemonade too!) stand in downtown Bethany is the greatest! the family in line behind us was really amused with my high level of excitement over something so seemingly trivial as fresh orangeade. (it really is delicious)
 the two Elizabeths :)

these towers were built during world war ii to locate off-shore submarines and ships! and they're still standing, which i think is incredible. more below about those (click to enlarge/read)

a trip to the beach always helps it feel like summertime, don't you think?

film. circa 2002.

i found these photographs quite recently....they're from when i had a film camera (summer 2002). they make me so happy!

[the ranch -- utah]

[cadillac moutain -- acadia national park, maine]

[west point lighthouse, prince edward island, canada]

p.s. we stayed in this lighthouse for a night!! not the tower itself because that is essentially a staircase; but we got to go up and see the light, and we stayed in the room all the way on the right of the attached building (our window is visible in this picture). i'm pretty sure i slept on the floor of our room in a sleeping bag. but it was COMPLETELY worth it. the canada family vacation (slash we hit up all of the northeastern states on the way/way back too) was one of my all time favorites.

what were some of your favorite childhood family roadtrips and vacations??

some summertime

bring on the creamsicle softserve, jersey sweet corn, movie nights, lightning bugs, book-reading, bike riding, and beach & philly day trips!

...maybe not the 94˚ weather, though (i.e. monday...when i was at a Memorial Day picnic and semi-playing softball..hmm, yes i realize this was maybe not the best plan)

i'm ready for some summer, how about you?

i went to the zoo yesterday.

and took these photographs.

it was this zoo, if you were wondering.
[very conveniently located, and very free]

hands down best thing about jersey.

farmstand strawberries.

chill saturdays.

literally and figuratively.

though if we're talking literally, that word probably needs a y at the end.

new york [mainly the met] in photography

yesterday i went up to new york city with my family, and we went to the cooper hewitt design museum and the met. both were so fantastic! i'd never been to the cooper hewitt and i loved everything there, and at the met i got to see specifically lots of pieces i studied in class this semester. it was the best day :]
