A few months ago I read a book about Italian farm architecture and I absolutely loved it. I love learning about the function and historical context for architecture and how its uses shape its eventual forms. I loved noting similarities and differences between Italian farm architecture and American farm architecture and seeing the choice of materials, proportions and details across many examples of this vernacular architecture.
Pure modern design sometimes feels too impersonal, with its clean lines and smooth textures. I still love it, but I love a perfect melding of historical detail with modern aesthetics, to create spaces that tell stories and histories while providing a backdrop for present life.
I loved this feature from the NYT—a nod to modern Italian design steeped in the traditions of historic, rustic Italian architecture.
I love this use of color and subtle reference to/spin on the primary colors. I like the primary colors, but they're somewhat harsh if used all together. Each of the three colors calls equally for your attention, so they're a bit demanding.
But here, the red is a little more orange, the blue and yellow a little more green. This off-balance iteration of the colors (two cool versions and one warm version) is just perfect, not to mention the beautiful texture of that velvet.
This modified prefabricated house is so so beautiful! I love the old farmhouses of the northeast (like my grandparents'), and this house references those with its modern and structural use of pine siding. It's such a clean, beautiful look and I especially love the second photo. I think it is so stunning.
I also love this windowed corner with its views of the surrounding landscape, as the sunshine and green can envelope you even as you're inside. This reminded me of my grandparents' farmhouse and how I enjoy sprawling out on their living room floor in the sunshine streaming in through the large windows.
