San Gimignano
We spent our Saturday in San Gimignano (Gee-mee-nya-no, in case you were wondering how that is pronounced), which was rather touristy. But this did not dim its beauty, as evidenced by the photographs below. It's a fairly small city, so we had plenty of time to walk around and enjoy the atmosphere there. The towers in San Gimignano are almost all made from grey stone (versus Siena's typical red brick) and I love the distinctive feel this brings to the city.
Margaret and I just really love stripes.
Perhaps the highlight of the day was going to this gelateria, which boasts the title of Gelato World Champion for four consecutive years. At first we made jokes about going in and shouting, "Auguri! L'avete fatto!" (Ã la Elf) but then we bought gelato and understood.
Limher finished his gelato before Margaret and Ashley were even out of the gelateria. The above photo depicts Margaret trying to convince Limher to go right back and get another gelato.
clockwise from the top: cannella (cinnamon--a new favorite), mandorle (almonds), and cioccolato bianco (white chocolate).
You may be wondering, "You're in Italy! How can the gelato get any better?" Although I'm no connoisseur, the texture was smoother and creamier than at all of the other gelaterie I've been to, and the flavors so rich. And all of us got gelato twice. Yes, this was slightly shameful. But definitely worth it.
