architectural depictions.

i can't get these two images out of my head, i love them! they've been lingering on my computer desktop waiting for me to be able to articulate on this blog exactly how i am inspired by them...

Alan Fletcher; Il Duomo - Milano (source)

the graphic designer Alan Fletcher is one of my favorite visual artists, and i count his book 'Picturing and Poeting' as among my favorites. what i love about this image is that it captures the details--click to enlarge!--of the building in a style that is distinctly Fletcher's. there is such a great amount of detail and precision! i also love the sketch-like qualities of this illustration. (his handwriting is fantastic too.)

Henri Matisse; Notre-Dame, une fin d'après-midi (source)

i have always been so inspired by Matisse's work and his use of color, for which he is famous. in this particular painting, i love that Matisse has simplified the rather intricate face of the Notre Dame cathedral to a simple colored form. it is only through the subtle variations in color that a suggestion of the intricate details are given.

architecture is a constant source of inspiration for me, and so it was interesting to me to find these two images that i LOVE which display in such opposite ways how these visual artists were inspired by architecture!
